The existing power grid is one of the most complex machines created in the 20th century. With the overlay of an information grid atop of this power infrastructure, with billions of sensing, communicating and other devices installed from generation to consuming devices, the power grid is going to get even more complex.
How do we tame this complexity?
Two keynotes at GridWeek this year will tackle this question. Mickey McManus from MAYA will explain that it's not the billions of devices he's worried about, it's when we talk trillions! Pat Gallagher from NIST will put some perspective on how we can start to systematically think about this challenge from his position at the nation's top organization on standards and technologies. | Terry Oliver To be successful in dealing with smart grid, new variable generation, climate change, etc., utilities need to operate disciplined R&D efforts at about 1/2 of 1% of revenues. It''s difficult to run an effective R&D program and utilities generally suck at it. But other companies run effective R&D and we can learn from them. |
