Understanding the Grid as a System of Systems

Event Over

The electric power system is unique in the large number of electrical, electronic, and communications related devices and systems that are interconnected and operating in real-time to transparently deliver energy to those who need it. This situation is the ultimate example of a system of systems - more complex than the space shuttle or an aircraft carrier - often also used as examples of systems of systems. The speakers in this session describe the planning and operational best practices they are using to design and operate these systems, managing unexpected perterbations of the system, and dealing with the issues associated with technology change and varying rates of change in different portions of a system.
