It’s often said that the electric grid of today is not vastly different to the one Edison developed a century ago. We know that the evolution of Smart Grid will create an energy system that will be profoundly different than that we have seen throughout the 20th century. But, the Smart Grid evolution does not happen in a vacuum. It happens in conjunction with major shifts and trends worldwide -- including globalization, digitization, environmentalism, economic changes, and a significant change in how people socialize and communicate.

What does energy consumption look like in 10 years from now, and how will these global trends impact that picture? How will the Facebook generation view electricity, privacy, social norms and sustainability? How will transportation evolve as oil prices skyrocket? Will people replace gas tanks with electric-vehicle batteries? The Smart Grid won’t be the same as our grandfather’s grid, just as 21st century energy consumers will not be the same as consumers of past centuries.

The Looking Forward Roundtable will discuss these and other key questions in attempts to paint a picture of what future energy consumption will look like. After all, how can we know we are developing the right Smart Grid if we don’t understand how energy will be consumed?
