Mr P Uma Shankar took over as Secretary of Power, Government of India in April 2010. Mr Shankar is Uttar Pradesh Cadre officer of the 1976 batch of Indian Administrative Service. Mr Shankar has held various significant assignments in different sectors in Government of India and Government of Uttar Pradesh. Mr Shankar served as a MD for National Cooperative Development Corporation before taking over as CMD of state owned Rural Electrification Corporation Limited, one of the largest lending organizations in the Indian Power Sector.
Mr Shankar holds the Master’s degree in Mathematics from Indian Institute of Technology, Chennai and in Social Policy and Planning in Developing Countries from London School of Economics.
